It’s 2025 and you’re ready to start your virtual assistant business or side hustle, but you have zero experience being a VA? Let me tell you, the majority of us start with ZERO virtual assistant business or virtual assistant job experience.

Back in 2022, I attended a women’s business conference to see what on earth people were doing that wasn’t a 9-5 corporate job. Like who are the women in business, what are they doing, and how are they succeeding.
I got so much more than an answer, I got inspiration.
Not only were women out here living their dreams, they were making great money, breaking generational curses and living on their own terms!
Okay yeah cool Tara, let’s get to the part where you tell me how I start my online business?
I’m going to share 3 steps to follow to get your foundations started for your virtual assistant business. It’s IMPORTANT to start with the basics!!!
1. Outline Your Goals For Your Virtual Assistant Business.
Why do you even want to start your virtual assistant business? Is your goal to work from home? Do you want to make a certain about of additional income as a side hustle? Do you want to leave your 9-5 corporate job? Sit down and write out exactly what you want to be able to do as a virtual assistant!
This is one of my fav business planning planners
2. Write Out Your Skills And Passions
You are going to leverage your CURRENT skills, expertise, experiences and passions to create your offers. A few skills to think of:
- Graphic Design
- Content Editing
- Copywriting
- Website / Coding
- Administrative Tasks
- Networking
- Organization
Once you have your skills and passions written out, pop them into ChatGPT with this prompt:
Here are my current skills, experiences and passions. I want to start a virtual assistant business. What are monetizable and highly sought after services that I could offer based on my current skill set. Give me a list of 20 with your top recommendations for where I should start.
3. What is your income goal and availability? Write down a number.
Decide what you income you want to bring in as a virtual assistant business and how often you are actually able to work. Be realistic. Don’t say you are down to work 60 hours a month when you have a full-time corporate job and other life responsibilities.
Write down the # of hours per week you are able to give to your side hustle or business, the amount of income you want to generate, and this will help you craft what your packages should be.

These are the foundational steps a lot of women who want to become online business owners or virtual assistants skip. BUT THEY ARE SO SO IMPORTANT!!
These foundations are the basis of everything you will build in your VA business, like who you want to work with, when you’re working, how many hours you work, income goals, etc.
